What You Need to Know for 2024 International Roadcheck Week

As the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) gears up for this year’s International Roadcheck taking place from May 14th to 16th, there are key focus areas and inspection points that carriers, drivers and shippers should be aware of.

This year’s roadcheck will emphasize tractor protection systems and controlled substance and alcohol possession among commercial motor vehicle drivers.

Focus Area #1: Tractor Protection and Anti-Bleed Back Systems:

A commercial motor vehicle’s tractor protection system comprises a tractor protection valve, trailer supply valve and anti-bleed back valve. During roadside inspections, these valves are tested to make sure they are properly functioning and comply with regulations. Inspectors will pay close attention to components of the tractor protection system, including:

• Ensuring the presence of wheel chocks and the release of all brakes by the driver.
• Carefully inspecting the gladhands and checking for air leaks, with at least 20 psi remaining.
• Vigilantly assessing for any leaked air at the gladhand couplers on the trailer.
• Requesting a full-service brake application by the driver.
• Listening and/or feeling for any air leaks from both air lines.

Focus Area #2: Controlled Substance and Alcohol Possession:

The prevalence of controlled substances and alcohol possession among commercial motor vehicle drivers poses a significant risk to road safety. With the increasing number of prohibited drivers in the U.S. Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse (DACH), it becomes imperative for inspectors to check for the presence of alcohol or controlled substances during inspections.

The inspection process involves observing the driver for any signs of alcohol or controlled substance use and/or impairment, examining the cab and trailer for any alcohol or controlled substances, and conducting a query in the DACH for inspections in the U.S.

What shippers need to know: 

• The roadcheck often leads to a temporary decrease in available capacity as some drivers opt not to drive during the inspection time frame. This can cause some spot rate volatility and you may see an uptick in rates within the spot market.
• The intensification of inspections during this period can also lead to delays and potential transportation disruptions. So be mindful, and if there are more time sensitive shipments make sure you are planning ahead in the event the driver on your load gets pulled over.

What carriers need to know: 

• Look at your tractor protection system in advance of hitting the road to determine if all wheel chocks are in place, gladhands are sealed and there are no air leaks from both air lines.
• Ensure there are no controlled substances or alcohol in your cab.

Being well-prepared and informed about the specific focus areas and potential impacts of International Roadcheck Week will allow all stakeholders to navigate this period of heightened inspections and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
