FMCSA SUSPENDS HOS REGULATIONS FOR COVID-19 RELIEF DRIVERS

ATLANTA, GA – March 13, 2020 – The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has issued a nationwide Hours of Service waiver for motor carriers providing emergency freight relief in response to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The emergency declaration is the first of its kind by the FMCSA and allows commercial drivers to provide direct assistance in supporting emergency relief efforts in all 50 states. With operational relief in place, carriers can transport and meet immediate needs for medical supplies, emergency restocking of food, hygiene and sanitation products, equipment and supplies for quarantine facilities and personnel providing medical or other emergency services related to COVID-19.

The FMCSA does not limit the hours of service while driving; however, once a delivery is complete, the driver must receive 10 hours off duty if delivering goods and eight hours off duty if transporting emergency relief passengers.

The HOS waiver will last through April 12, 2020 or until the nationwide emergency has ended, whichever comes sooner.
