Operation Safe Driver 2024: Safe Driving Means Fewer Crashes

Blog

Operation Safe Driver Week is July 7 to 13, 2024

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) launched Operation Safe Driver in 2007 in partnership with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, law enforcement and industry, to promote safe driving practices among both commercial and passenger vehicle drivers. The program brings awareness of driving behaviors of both passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles with increased traffic enforcement.

The CVSA program aims to reduce the number of fatalities and injuries resulting from crashes by targeting unsafe driving behaviors like speeding, distracted driving, and non-compliance with regulations.

Operation Safe Driver Week: A One-Week Enforcement and Educational Campaign

Every year, Operation Safe Driver holds a one-week enforcement and educational campaign to increase awareness of safe driving practices. In 2020, despite the challenges associated with the pandemic, 3,681 enforcement officers from 55 jurisdictions in the US and Canada participated in the event. Law enforcement personnel interacted with tens of thousands of commercial and passenger vehicle drivers and issued over 71,000 warnings and citations, which research has shown is an effective way to alter drivers’ actions.

Why Target Driver Behaviors?

Drivers’ actions contribute to 94% of all crashes. To combat this alarming trend, Operation Safe Driver targets both commercial and passenger vehicle drivers’ behaviors, educating them on how to share the road safely. In 2023, there was a 24% increase in roadway fatalities, despite fewer vehicles on the roads. Operation Safe Driver Week is just one way the CVSA is committed to reversing this trend.

Program Initiatives

The program focuses on passenger vehicle and commercial drivers, educating them on sharing the road safely, offering commercial driver educational and awareness programs to motor carrier populations, and promoting safe operations around commercial motor vehicles. Additionally, the program conducts passenger and commercial vehicle traffic enforcement initiatives, identifying and targeting unsafe driving behaviors.

The CVSA’s Operation Safe Driver program is a comprehensive initiative aimed at reducing unsafe driver behaviors that contribute to the majority of traffic crashes. The yearly Operation Safe Driver Week is a crucial event, where law enforcement and industry partner to alter drivers’ actions, issuing warnings and citations when necessary. The program’s diverse initiatives aim to educate and promote safe driving, with the ultimate goal of reducing the number of fatalities and injuries resulting from crashes.
